Mizuno MX-700 Driver Review

Author: gnugent  |  Category: Golf Equipment

The new Mizuno MX-700 driver has certainly taken a stand atop the new driver list this year.  The new Mizuno 460cc driver is a wide body geometry shaped driver that pushes the CG toward the back… way back.  And CG is not he only thing going for this driver.  The face incorporates a Ti-9 titanium alloy that is designed with a grain structure that really allows this driver to improve ball speed especially on off center hits.

Mizuno offers “Power Hull” body construction utilizes internal reinforcements for powerful sound and feel.  The MX-700 will replace the beloved MX-560.  Some may be disappointed of the replacement, most will enjoy the upgrade.

A quick snapshot of the Mizuno MX-700 Spec Sheet-

Face Height…………………: 52 mm
Face Area…………………..: 44.6 cm
Shaft Length…………….:  45.5?
Heel to Toe……………….: 113 mm
Front to Back……………: 120 mm
MOI……………………………:  High
Launch Angle……………:  High
Spin Rate……………………: Low

This driver exudes confidence at address, I just plain like the looks of this driver.  Mizuno has traditionally catered to the more accomplished player.  Until now that is – in the case of the Mizuno MX-700, they broke the mold by offering the recreational player a nice higher launch, low spin driver that will be sure to fare well among the masses looking for such traits.

Really the only negative was the head fitting not being interchangeable.  Therefore, since there is an extensive custom shaft selection including Fujikura, Grafalloy and Mitsubishi, it makes it difficult to test.

Overall Rating-

No doubt, the Mizuno MX-700 deserves your attention this year.  It earned a Silver rating from Golf Digest for drivers under $350.  “A “Hot Metal” face and geometric body design combine to create Mizuno’s most powerful and most forgiving driver ever,” Straight from Mizuno.  Yep, put this one on your short list this spring to take a good long look at.

How To Select The Finest Men’s Golf Club Set

Author: gnugent  |  Category: Golf Equipment

You might think that all golf club sets available out there are similar to each other, but that is not so at all. There is a lot of difference among the different sets available out there, especially those from other makers. What is the need of having so many different types? The reason is that there are many golfers out there, each with different needs and preferences. It is important to satisfy all of them and that is the reason for this variety in golf club sets. You are going to find that golf club sets are different from each other in terms of their design, their styles and, of course, their colors. So, how do you make the choice? Well, here are some points to consider.

Men’s Golf Club Set – Selecting the Style

The best thing to do here is to select a golf club set that is in tandem with your own style. What do you like – contemporary or antique? Well, this is just one example here. You could choose a golf club between these styles. There are so many other style variations to choose from. The most important thing is to choose something that goes with you, and not with your clothes or shoes or your cap. Price also could be a determining factor here because the price is dependent on the style.

Men’s Golf Club Set – Selecting the Price

A mens golf club set can be found in a wide range of prices, with each type of golf club set available in several different prices from different manufacturers. Some types of mens golf club set, such as a custom mens golf club set, will cost more than standard golf club sets because of the additional steps needed in the manufacturing process. It is important to determine how much you would be willing to spend for the mens golf club set before you go out to shop for the golf club set so that you are not spending more money than you intend and find yourself in a difficult financial situation. Choosing a price range to focus on before heading out to shop for the golf club set will also reduce the amount of time that you will spend looking for the golf club set because you can limit your focus to golf club sets that are within that price range.

Men’s Golf Club Set – Deciding the Size

The size of the mens golf club set that is chosen is also very important for obtaining the best golf club set for your home. Some sets come with more than a dozen different clubs while some others come in a much smaller amount and you can add additional pieces when shopping for golf clubs in the future. Purchasing a mens golf club set that has a large number of clubs included will be a waste of money for a beginner because they will have too many choices to make while trying to improve their game.

Playing At A Golf Country Club

golf training

Most golfers find the game of golf very relaxing. Whether it is putting on the greens that they most enjoy, the ambiance of the golf country club restaurant or the chance to spend time with like-minded friends and other country club members, it can be quite the enjoyable time. Playing the game may be the highlight of the country club trip, but it is good to know that you can spend your entire day at the club and on the fairways and greens, with all the comforts that you desire.

Most golf and country club settings offer you a choice of restaurants that cater to most tastes. Next to the restaurant is the golf store, where you can purchase many items pertaining to golf that you will need for your game. If there are any items in the golf shop that you are not sure of, then a golf pro is normally on hand to explain their uses to you. Many of the items may be something that you will need as your game evolves and grows, such as golf apparel, golf gloves and other golf accessories and equipment that you would like to have.

If you are new at the game of golf and are looking to learn techniques that will help your game, then a membership at a golf country club can offer you the ability to learn from a golf pro. These are individuals who are paid by the golf club to offer golf training and suggest golf training aids to further develop your game. Besides learning and playing the game of golf, there are normally other things that individuals can do to enjoy themselves. Many golf clubs are equipped with a at least one swimming pool and at times a game room for the kids.

While you will most likely have to pay dues to belong to a golf country club, you will be offered much more than you would at a regular golf course. The country club will allow you to be a part of the golfing community. If you have never visited a country club that showcases golf, then you will find that it can be an experience like no other. You can spend time playing the game you love and meet other people with the same love of the game. It can be an enjoyable experience for everyone.

Choosing a Golf Travel Package

Golf Travel Package

Have you been given the job of planning a golf travel vacation for your company?  There are many corporate packages available online or through your local travel agent.  They offer discount golf vacations to international golf locations and destinations within the U.S.

Many of the golf resorts will also have meeting or conference rooms available for your group. Of course, no golf travel package is complete without tee times reserved at some of the top rated courses in the world.  A corporate package will include group discounts.  The more people the less it is per person.  You will also want to inquire about special discount offers for your golf travel package such as discount vouchers for greens fees at other local courses, car rentals and meals.

Some of these corporate packages can be priced as low as $1500 per person to as little as $200.  The golf travel package prices would vary according to the number of individuals (the more the lower the per-person cost), number of nights, meals, location and probably would not include your airfare.

A golf travel package can be customize to accommodate your particular needs. There are hundreds of locations to choose from.  Almost anywhere there is a gof resort a golf travel package can be designed for your corporate or individual use.

Consider a golf travel package to faraway destinations such as St. Andrews, Argentina, Puerto Rico, Scotland, South Africa, Ireland, the Caribbean or France.  Stay in the U.S. and visit golf locations in Arizona, Colorado, California, Florida or Augusta.

Many of these destinations, both international and in the U.S., have beautiful golf resorts with spas and top rated restaurants on site.

The cost would vary of course on the dates but could include: Six nights first class accommodations, car or rental van, full  breakfast daily, lunches at all three as well as guaranteed tee times & paid green fees, and all the services the local resort offers.

You have the option to plan your golf travel package around one of the golf championships such as the Masters Tournament at Augusta, or the U.S. Open and watching the pros in action.

It is always important to plan ahead to insure your golf travel package will be the best vacation you have ever taken.

Reviewing The Evolution Of Golf Balls

Author: gnugent  |  Category: Golf Accessories, Golf Equipment

the country club hills

The way that golf Balls are made, as with any golf accessories, has changed drastically since the time that they were invented. The first golf ball was made from wood; the next concept in the ball came in the early part of the 17th century. When it came to tee times in this era, the golf ball that was used was a cowhide outer hull stuffed with the feathers of a goose. While these balls worked well at the time, it took a long time to manufacture the balls and they were very expensive, relative to the era.

In 1948, Dr Robert Adams invented balls that were made from Sapodilla tree sap. The sap was heated, which allowed it to be molded into a round shape. However, it was quickly realized that perfectly round balls did not fly as far as balls that had a somewhat irregular shape to them. After this discovery, the balls were produced with the irregular shape to them on purpose, allowing for farther and better flying. The balls were also much cheaper than those that had been produced before. It was then that almost every golf club in existence began using these “guttie” balls for tee times.

In the last century, golf balls were made with multiple layers, consisting of a liquid center, a rubber thread wound tight over it and having a cover put on it to make our modern ball. The country club hills of today have slowly played a part in refining the design to what it is today. Nowadays, they are made as 2, 3 or 4 layered balls, and materials like surlyn or urethane are used to form the layers. The dimples on these balls make it possible for them to be hit farther than plain balls because of the lift and drag effect on them.

Today, to be considered regulation golf balls, the balls need to be completely spherical in shape. This is a requirement of the US Golf Association. They must also be 1.62 ounces or less in weight. There are other sizes of balls that are available; however, those balls are never used in regulation play. The two types of balls in existence are the recreational ball and the advanced balls. Balls that are used for recreational play are most often made with two layers, while the advanced balls are made with three layers. The advanced balls are more expensive and have more spinning power.

Are computer games taking over from sport?

Author: gnugent  |  Category: Golf News

The real problem is that the real sports only apply to the people that play them whereas the computer games like Wii Sports can apply to anyone at all which is having a huge impact on sport itself. Just how close are computer games to the real thing? If you are trying to lose weight, does playing on a games console instead of playing the real thing really help? The most simple way to put it is . . . perhaps.  Obviously if you are buying say a golf game for the 360 or PS3 it is not going to do anything apart from save you money on one of those electric golf trolleys.

On the other hand if you were to purchase one on the Wii the only thing you are missing out on is the walking aspect of the sport. A lot of the pro's in golf do not bother to even walk the course as it is so how much are you really missing out on. Game devlopers are always looking to improve the games they are making and this has become more of a competition than anything and the Wii is taking advantage of this by using its powerful motion sensing technlogy. When playing sports games that use your hands like golf and tennis it actually feels like you are playing the real thing which I have to admit is fantastic. The new Wii atachment is out later this year which is going to put motion sensing technology at an even better rate than it already is now. This means game developers will certainly be more inclined to make the games for the Wii even more realistic than before. Is this really making any difference at all? It is a great idea for all the people who simply cant afford to go out and pay loads of fees. Everytime you wish to play golf all you have to do is walk to the console and switch it on.

Personally I love games, but I think that they should stick to making the games that people that play them like and leave the sporting ones out of it. Every sport requires a huge talent to be able to play in a half decent way and it would certainly be a shame to see less and less people to start playing over time because of computer games.

So next time your stuck between going out in the rain for a round of golf or plugging in the Wii for a bit of a game, stop and think, the real thing is always better so charge up those golf batteries and get playing!

The top golf courses

Author: gnugent  |  Category: Golf Courses

Here are my personal top five courses from places all over the World. Get those electric golf trolleys ready, here come the best of the best.

5. Shinecock Hills is at number five
This is a brilliant course that has been the host to four US opens. A very challenging course is this one, your certainly going to struggle to get the usual handicap on this one. This course was first designed in 1891 and was re-designed later in 1930, with little changing since then proving the course to be almost faultless.

4. St Andrews golf course (old)
This is more than likely the oldest golf course in the world with golf rumoured to have been played here way back in the 12th century. Although known as the home of golf it is apparently not very good for newcomers to the course. This is a course that you have to get to know before you like playing here so many other golfers have said.

3. Cypress point golf club
Most people are very unlikely to ever get to play here as it only has 250 members but the last four holes of the course have been called the best four of all time. Having never played this course I have to say I have no idea how good or bad it is but it certainly had to come into the top five.

2. Royal County Down
This course has been voted the best course in the UK, locaded in Ireland it was designed way back in 1889 with huge modifcations made in 1908. This has to be at number two simply because it is a stunning course with some of the best holes I have ever had the pleasure to play on.

1. Pine Valley
It had to be the number one slot purely because it is the most stunning course I have ever seen in my life. This course has great caddies and in itself is brilliant with the only problem being the 10ft deep bunker with no sand in it! If you get the golf ball into the bunker then there is no way you are going to get out of it.

So there you have it the top five golf courses in the world. No need to charge up those golf batteries when you have the caddies at these places to drag your clubs around for you.

Losing Weight Playing Golf

Author: gnugent  |  Category: Golf News

To a lot of people when you mention golf it comes as somewhat a very boring and tedious game. If you tell it in an exercise form then they think what sort of exercise can I get from hitting a club?

Well I will tell you a great story of how playing a game of golf actually helped me lose arounf 60 pounds. I was around 18 years old. I am not a very tall person but I did weigh an extremley heavy 19 stone, I was one of these people that would just sit in front of the TV and computer all week long and snack out. It became apparent to me that I was over weight when I walked up a small flight of stairs and could barely catch my breath.

Something had to be done before I turned into something that was going to ruin my body for the rest of my life. I first started to try to go to the gym, but it was just too much I was in no physical state to be visiting the gym. Everything I tried to do I just got out of air. So one of my dear friends suggested that I go to the local golf club and start playing golf, the first thing that came to my mind was how the heck will that help?

But I gritted my teeth and took the plunge, I actually very much enjoyed my first game and it was very rewarding. I got a splash of sunshine and a breath of fresh air. But what was happening to my body was what shocked me I was using all of my muscles without even know. I regularly played 3 times a week and in 5 months I had lost all of my weight. I would definitely recommend golf to anyone.

Cobra S9-1 Driver Review

Author: gnugent  |  Category: Golf Equipment

Center of Gravity (CG) is the primary focus with the new Cobra S9-1 Driver.  The all titanium driver has been somewhat downsized for each loft.  In addition to the optimized CG, rather dramatic changes have been made from last year’s model such as slightly narrower face and less crown surface area.  The weight has been reduced by almost 6 grams to increase club-head speed – this is huge.  Making golf clubs as light as possible is a very big perk in my opinion.  Stripping unnecessary weight to increase club-head speed.  This is the name of the game to gain additional yardage.

Other notables for the Cobra S9-1 is the new Hotter 9 Points technology to further increase clubface efficiency. What is this?  It’s the design of the driver to maximize COR using a Dual Rhombas insert to promote higher ball speed and a more consistent ball flight across the entire club face.

Comes in three different models (excluding the S9-1 Pro):  S9-1 M for swing speeds of 87-108 and ball speeds of 125-155, S9-F for swing speeds of 97 or less and ball speeds of 140 or less and finally the S9-M (offset) for swing speeds of 97 or less and ball speeds of 140 or less.

Cobra S9-1 Spec Sheet-

Face Height…….. 53 mm
Shaft Length…… 45.5
Face Area……….. 43.7
Heel to Toe…….. 107 mm
Front to Back…… 120 mm
MOI……………….. Very High

The Cobra S9-1 is an absolutely great looking driver.  Cobra has always come out with stellar drivers and this one is no exception.  Very high MOI and balanced face makes this one of the straighter drivers on the market today.  Excellent custom shaft selection such as Graphite Design, YS-6+ and YS-7+, Aldila DVS, Aldila NV, Grafalloy Prolaunch, Proforce V2, Fujikura Speedax, Rombax, and the Mitsubishi Diaman to name a few.

The Cobra S9-1 is probably more geared for the average player.  Lacks lower loft selection (starting at 9.5) unless you go to the Cobra S9-1 Pro model – this is not a negative to the majority of players however.

The Cobra S9-1 will be a hit for players looking for greater distance and accuracy.  A high launch driver that’s straight and long, the general consensus is that it will be a hit for Cobra after making a Gold Rating in the Golf Digest Driver reviews for 2009?. This is definitely a driver putting on your short list this spring.

Stack and Tilt:Find Out How a Bit of Stack and Tilt Could Transform Your Game

Author: gnugent  |  Category: Golf Training

Stack & Tilt

There are three things that every golfer strives to do from the complete novice right through to Tiger Woods and that is to drive the ball longer, straighter and more consistently. Most of us are plagued by ugly shots from time to time but what if you could eliminate those fat and thin shots for good? Well there is a change happening and it is known as Stack and Tilt and it just may be that your prayer has been answered.

Have you even heard of stack and tilt? You probably have as you have found this article but you’re probably not completely clued up as to what it’s all about. If you don’t know about it it is simply a different kind of golf swing which is having an amazing effect on many tour experts – Mike Weir, Aaron Baddeley and Charlie Wi, to mention some of them but so far more than 20 experts have switched to using a Stack and Tilt golf swing.

The History of Stack and Tilt Andy Plummer and Mike Bennett are known as the ‘Golf Whisperers’ because of the number of players they have helped to become winners on the tour. It is these guys who, after 20 years of research, have developed this amazing new swing which completely contradicts the basics being taught about ‘the swing’ today.

The Difference Between The Stack and Tilt Swing and a Traditional Swing Normally when a golfer learns to swing a club he or she is taught to transfer their weight on to their back foot. The problem with this is that what sometimes tends to happen is that the swing bottoms out behind the ball. This then causes some of those bad contacts which result in an awful shot that makes golf so discouraging. What’s different about the Stack and Tilt, however, is that the weight moves forward so the swing bottoms out in front of the ball. This results in a pure, smooth contact that feels totally effortless and not a horrible contact that reverberates up your club into your hands!

The execution of the swing is extremely simple and the benefit is that very quickly you will see that your ball will go further straighter and more consistently than with any other golf swing – it’s really pretty remarkable!
